“Full of humor and tenderness...a cozy, sexy romance." –Ashley Herring Blake, author of Delilah Green Doesn’t Care
A charming home run of a queer holiday romance where two former classmates’ plan to fake-date their way to freedom goes immediately awry—but, perhaps, exactly the way they need it to

Murphy was supposed to be settling into her junior year at the University of Illinois with her best friend, Kat. Instead, she’s stuck in a hellish suburban holding pattern: living with her parents, failing the same class that kept her from graduating the first time around, and making minimum wage at the same coffee shop she’s worked at since she was sixteen. It doesn't help that the dating pool for a twenty-one-year-old lesbian in the tiny town of Geneva, Illinois, is anemic at best.
When her and Kat’s long-awaited reunion is plagued by stuttering conversation and uninvited guests, Murphy’s resentment threatens to boil over. That is, until a miracle appears in the form of Ellie Meyers, a former classmate who is way cuter and not nearly as straight as Murphy remembers. Their heavy flirting holds the promise of something more… until Murphy learns that Ellie’s mom is the very professor preparing to flunk Murphy for a second semester in a row. Talk about killing the vibe.
Romance might be off the table, but Ellie could be Murphy’s key to getting into Professor Meyers’ good graces and finally getting out of Geneva. And Murphy—well-versed in defying parental expectations—might be Ellie’s chance to get her mother onboard with her own dreams. Together, they hatch a plot: fake a relationship for a holiday weekend at the Meyers’ house. If everything goes according to plan, Ellie will be living her dream halfway across the country, and Murphy will finally be able to graduate community college and start her life in earnest. So, the fact that Murphy can’t stop thinking about Ellie’s lips on hers isn't relevant. It’s just a part played well.
Right?
A story about opening your heart to possibility, I'll Get Back To You is a giddy love letter to anyone in need of a bit of bravery to step up to the plate—and to the unending process of finding yourself.

Grischow’s debut is as self-assured and charming as her protagonist desperately wishes she herself were. Three years into a marketing degree and Murphy can’t catch a break. Her best friend Kat has transferred from their community college to the University of Illinois, while Murphy is stuck in their little hometown and her parents’ house until she can pass accounting and make the same move. Then Kat comes back for Thanksgiving with a boyfriend and a life that doesn’t seem to have space for Murphy in it anymore. While feeling hurt and abandoned, Murphy meets funny, artsy, super-attractive Ellie, who’s also back home for Thanksgiving and reeling from a recent breakup. The pair bond over a night of sharing their woes, after which Murphy realizes that Ellie’s mother is her accounting professor, who notoriously goes easy on her favorites. So they make a deal: Murphy will pretend to be Ellie’s girlfriend, since Ellie didn’t have the courage to tell her parents she was dumped. They’ll use the ruse to talk Ellie’s parents into letting her attend the grad school program of her dreams and to get Murphy enough good graces for a passing grade. But only pretending to love Ellie turns out to be much harder than it looks. Grischow’s take on fake dating is compulsively readable, funny, and full of heart. Readers will fall for this as fast as Murphy falls for Ellie. Agent: Dana Murphy, Trellis Literary.

Narrator Allison Grischow sinks into the misery of best-friend drama with gusto. Murphy and Kat plan to reunite on Thanksgiving Eve in their hometown of Geneva, Illinois. But when Kat shows up with her boyfriend in tow, Murphy's plans crumble. In a casual tone, Grischow makes Murphy realistic and endearing. Murphy's growing depression has her agreeing to be her high school classmate, Ellie's, fake girlfriend for Thanksgiving dinner. Murphy's character has a midrange voice, Ellie's a lighter one, and Ellie's family members are distinctive. While Kat's voice doesn't sound exactly as author Grischow describes her, narrator Grischow delivers the story's mix of comedy and despair. As Murphy examines her life choices, both Grischows faithfully chronicle her amusing holiday journey. C.A. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

This cute, sapphic, holiday, fake-dating romance debut sees two college-aged queer women teaming up over Thanksgiving to achieve mutual goals. Murphy, 21, finds herself stuck in her tiny hometown of Geneva, IL, trying not to fail the same class that prevented her from graduating last time. With hopes of joining her best friend in Chicago next year, Murphy needs to find a way to pull off a passing grade. Enter a former classmate, Ellie Meyers, whom Murphy bumps into at a bar. As the two strike up a friendly conversation, they realize that Murphy's professor is also Ellie's mother, and they just might be able to help each other out by going to Ellie's house for the holidays as fake girlfriends. The plan is for Murphy to make a good impression on her professor while simultaneously helping smooth the path for Ellie's mother to agree to her pursuing her dream of living on the West Coast. While a touch angsty and dramatic at times, this fun rom-com is well narrated by the author's sister, Allison Grischow, who voices both women with heart and distinction. VERDICT Fans of sapphic holiday stories such as Alison Cochrun's Kiss Her Once for Me are the audience for Grischow's fun novel.--Shannon O'Connor
