David Lagercrantz's detective duo, Rekke and Vargas, returns in a new installment of the internationally best-selling series that began with Dark Music (“A classic mystery . . . One Holmes himself would have loved to solve” —The Independent).
Dead women should not show up in photos fourteen years beyond the grave . . . But if anyone is likely to recognize Claire Lidman, it's her husband, Samuel. He brings the photo to Hans Rekke and Micaela Vargas. Their initial skepticism gives way to cautious belief—but where will this case lead them?
Meanwhile, Rekke's daughter, Julia, has a new boyfriend she's determined to keep secret. When word gets out, Micaela's world collapses around her, and Rekke is forced to confront a nemesis from his youth.
Plunging us back into the political upheaval and financial crisis of the 1990s, as the Iron Curtain is finally lifted, the second Rekke and Vargas investigation sees our heroes grapple with a fiendish case that affects them both in profoundly personal ways.

In Lagercrantz’s excellent second investigation for Stockholm police officer Micaela Vargas and professor Hans Rekke (after Dark Music), the pair reopens a cold case when a holiday snapshot suggests a long-missing banker may be alive and well in Venice. Financier Claire Lidman was last seen in 1999 and reported dead 14 years later—but her husband, Samuel, brings Vargas a photograph that he swears contains the supposedly dead woman in the background. Vargas loops in forensics expert Rekke, and the more they investigate, the more they start to believe Samuel. Soon, they uncover Claire’s connections to a vast conspiracy involving high-ranking Swedish government officials, international finance, and organized crime in the former Soviet Union. Meanwhile, Vargas and Rekke face their own dramas: Rekke’s daughter gets a new boyfriend who causes friction between the friends, and an old enemy emerges from the professor’s past. Part of the fun is Lagercrantz’s deliberate use of Holmesian tropes—there’s a Moriarty-like criminal mastermind, and Vargas and Rekke echo Holmes and Watson in more ways than one—but he departs from Conan Doyle’s template with a complex, borderline-baroque mystery plot, to thrilling effect. By the end of the pulse-pounding denouement, readers will be breathless for the next installment. Agent: Jessica Bab, Brave New World.

This audiobook is a wonderful example of the magic that occurs when a complex story is brought to life by the Golden Voice of Simon Vance. At its core, this is a mystery revolving around the sudden reappearance of Claire Lidman, who has been presumed dead for 14 years. Claire's husband, Samuel, hires Hans Rekke, a disgraced professor, and Detective Michaela Vargas to solve the mystery of Claire's possible death or sudden reappearance. The novel intricately weaves in elements such as the 1990s financial crisis and the fall of the Berlin Wall, creating a fascinating story. Vance is an ideal choice as narrator. His performance adeptly combines a straightforward style with nuanced expressions of bemusement and incredulity, enhancing the overall listening experience. D.J.S. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine

Hans Rekke, a former criminologist struggling with addiction and other mental health conditions, and Stockholm police officer Vargas are back in Lagercrantz's (Dark Music) latest novel. When a current photo of a woman thought long dead surfaces, Rekke and Vargas are asked to investigate. They begin a quest to find the truth about what happened to the woman. As they progress into the mystery, they are exposed to nefarious players. Although Rekke and Vargas are no strangers to the seedy underbelly of Swedish society, their work is made increasingly more difficult as personal connections to players in the shadows are brought to light. AudioFile Golden Voice Simon Vance guides listeners through the story, delighting with his pleasing British lilt as he crafts unique voices for each character. Although the story starts slowly, it soon gains momentum, culminating in a satisfying, pulse-pounding ending. VERDICT A carefully plotted thriller, sure to please listeners seeking a complex, Sherlock Holmes style-mystery with a Swedish twist. Recommended for fans of Scandinavian crime fiction in the vein of Jussi Adler-Olsen's The Keeper of Lost Causes.--Misty Schattle
