Protect yourself, your children, your pets, and your home from bugs — without using harsh or toxic chemicals! Herbalist Stephanie Tourles offers 75 simple recipes for safe, effective bug repellents you can make at home from all-natural ingredients. For protection from mosquitos, ticks, and other biting insects, there are sprays, balms, body oils, and tinctures, with scents ranging from eucalyptus to floral, lemon, vanilla, and woodsy spice. There are also recipes for pets, such as herbal shampoo, bedding formulas, and flea-and-tick collars and powders. And Tourles includes repellents for the home, such as sachets that repel moths, carpet powders that repel fleas and ants, and essential oil repellents to keep your pantry pest-free. A detailed ingredient dictionary explains the properties of all the herbs, essential oils, and other key ingredients.

Looking for relief from biting and stinging insects, but not crazy about harsh chemicals in commercial repellents? Tourles, author of several books on natural health and organic beauty products, presents natural options to keep the bugs away. This book follows the same organization as the author's previous titles. A lot of information and professional advice is given, especially on materials, tools, and ingredients. The core of this work is the recipes for bug repellents--for people, pets, and home. Safety considerations are stressed, especially with appropriate application of the repellents. The recipes are dependent on essential oils, which means finding specialty retailers. Be aware, these ingredients can be expensive. The line drawings are underwhelming, and there is no illustration for technique and directions. VERDICT For those looking for a natural solution to the bugs that bug you, this title offers a nice package of products. While there are other offerings on the use of essential oils, this one is uniquely focused and complete with exceptional guidance.
