"...and then we see it - way out there at the far corner of the field - the ripple, the dashing furrow, the blur of the streaking dog, white chest, flashing feet." - From Heart of a Champion by T.C. Boyle

The cast of characters in this compilation is a menagerie of animals-cats, dogs, birds, even a dragon-and their owners. These stories look at the myriad of experiences, and adventures, that pet ownership can bring. Join a medieval scholar who discovers that not all mythical creatures are extinct, stalk the night with the Cat of Frankenstein, kick that caffeine habit with a class of kindergartners, dance along with a divorcee and her dog, and more!

Gail Godwin's St. George

Read by Jane Curtin

Confronted by a living dragon, a medieval scholar is no expert.

Ana Menendez's Story of a Parrot

Read by Jacqueline Kim

A beautiful bird makes a woman reflect on her marriage.

Robertson Davies' The Cat that Went to Trinity

Read by Charles Keating

A gothic tale of a Frankenstein cat.

Molly Giles' Pie Dance

Read by Kate Burton

A divorcee is doing just fine with her dancing dog, Stray.

T.C. Boyle's Heart of a Champion

Read by Isaiah Sheffer

A hilarious Lassie send-up, in the style of a film treatment.

Max Steele's The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers

Read by Paul Hecht

A teacher's last lesson for her caffeinated kindergarteners.

This audio collection takes in a range of creatures and wry twists that form a timely antidote to the current trend of putting pets on pedestals. The most notable tale is Gail Godwin’s “St. George,” in which Curtin captures both the hilarity and poignancy of a dragon’s short sojourn in the apartment of a baffled medievalist. T.C. Boyle’s “Heart of a Champion” lampoons the Lassie
TV show. Isaiah Sheffer narrates the tale with gusto and great timing, but some of his diction is off. The cat stories are uneven. Charles Keating has great fun with Robertson Davies’s “The Cat That Went to Trinity,” a clever spoof of Frankenstein
. Max Steele’s “The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers” is only peripherally about a fighting tomcat, though well read by Paul Hecht. Ana Menendez’s “Story of a Parrot” rounds out the collection. Jacqueline Kim is perhaps too accurately shrill as she acts out a harridan housewife’s encounter with a sly bird. This is a clever collection that will be great fun for animal lovers.
